Pleasure or Torture? Pleasure. No Doubt!

Sunday morning Jason and I ran the Big D Texas Half Marathon! We ran ALL of it!

I could give you a detailed recap of the entire race. I could describe how I felt for every inch of the course. Unfortunately, that would make this blog entry unbearably long. Instead I will sum up the race in a single paragraph.

We got stuck in the herd of people for the first three miles or so. Progress was made by darting in and out of the crowd. I didn’t start to get out of breath until the middle of mile 7. Miles 7-10 were relatively uneventful. At mile 10 Jason left me and I ran the rest of the race alone. Mile 11 brought on a terrible case of athlete’s asthma, something I’ve been suffering from since high school. After that it was just a matter of making it to the finish line.

Jason finished two minutes ahead of me in 2 hours 11 minutes in 939th place/1076 people. I finished in 2 hours 13 minutes in 1010th place….not that place matters when you’re not really expecting to win but its nice to know where in the crowd you are.

After the race Jason and I caught our breath, grabbed some snacks (and beer) and walked down the finish chute to cheer on the other runners and they came through. After a just a few minutes we both decided that it was time to go home.

We spent the rest of the day watching the Masters and dozing. Sunday afternoon, after the ibuprofen wore off I was in some pretty stout pain. Slowly though the pain is disappearing and what I’m left with is an amazing sense of accomplishment.

Was it as fun as I thought it would be? Absolutely. When I crossed the finish line I was wheezing and exhausted but when I heard them call my name as I was coming through the finish chute it made it all worth it. 100% worth it.
