Long Run

Up until just recently, marathon training has entailed just running a steady mileage of 15-17 miles a week. Base mileage.

Week before last was the beginning of ACTUAL marathon training where the mileage and distances start to build. Considering the fact that I HATE running in the morning, dealing with the heat of the summer has become somewhat of a necessity. On Saturday, I knew I was staring down the barrel of a 9-miler and spent the entire day staring at the thermometer. The 9-mile, White Rock Lake Loop was my predetermined route of choice and I knew I could handle it.

My husband, who is my voice of reason, pointed out that it was, indeed, 101 degrees outside. He was quick to offer his services as my support crew. Kinda like the bikers in the Tour de France have those guys in cars that follow them, I had a husband on a bicycle with a backpack full of ice water. He spent a hour and a half peddling behind me at the blistering pace of 6 mph.

“How are you doing? Do you need water?”

“No. *pant* I’m okay, for now. In five *pant* minutes.”

Repeat. Repeat, again.

The system worked well. I had a never ending supply of water and he got to spend an hour and a half staring at my butt. A win for both of us! Thanks honey!
